Active Elements, Epic Scenery, Off the Beaten Path, Rural Charm, Wildlife Encounters Discover the windswept cliffs, puffin colonies and turf-roofed villages of the Faroe Islands on this independent journey through its wild, remote reaches.
Trip Overview:
Experience the freedom of the open road and the untamed beauty of the Faroe Islands on this self-drive journey through its most striking regions. Begin on Vagar, where sea meets sky at Gásadalur’s cliffside waterfall and the jagged outline of Tindhólmur rises from the Atlantic.
Sail to Mykines, a birdwatcher’s paradise where puffins and gannets nest along sheer cliffs. Then travel south to Suduroy, where panoramic hikes, dramatic rock formations and quiet villages reveal a wilder, more remote character. Visit the historic village of Fámjin, where the original Faroese flag is proudly displayed.
Return to Tórshavn to stroll through its turf-roofed old town and continue to Kirkjubøur, a cultural heartland where medieval ruins tell the story of the islands’ past. From here, head north across Eysturoy to see the sea stacks known as the Giant and the Witch, then on to the colourful village of Gjógv and the scenic heights of Slættaratindur.
Spend a night in Klaksvík and explore the remote northern isles, including Viðareiði—poised at the edge of the world. On your final day, don’t miss a boat tour of the Vestmanna bird cliffs before heading to the airport. This route offers the perfect blend of nature, culture and independence—ideal for travellers who want to see the Faroes at their own pace.

Hotel: Hotel Hafnia (4 Star Rating)
Stay in the heart of the city. In the mid-twentieth century Christian Restorff started building a new hotel in Torshavn. The hotel opened in 1951 and was named "Hafnia". In the following decades the hotel expanded drastically, and as time went Hotel Hafnia became the biggest hotel in the Faroe Islands. Hotel Hafnia has 79 rooms in total and 4 cottages. All rooms are non-smoking rooms. They offer rooms for people who suffer from allergy. At Hotel Hafnia they are always ready to accommodate the guests. The reception is open 24/7. The chefs in the restaurant are trained professionals, and they love challenging themselves by cooking new food every day - from scratch of course. They also throw parties and arrange dinners in their event rooms. At Cafe Kaspar, they offer good coffee, drinks, and light meals in a modern but cozy setting. It is possible to order take away from Cafe Kaspar and Restaurant Hafnia as well.

Take the ferry from Torshavn to the island of Suduroy. The nature on Suduroy varies from that further north and is particularly well suited to hiking. We recommend visiting the lighthouse at Akraberg on the southernmost tip of the island and also Beinisvord, to enjoy the magnificent panorama that unfolds when you get to the top. The village of Famjin, situated in beautiful and dramatic surroundings, is also well worth a visit. The original Faroese flag hangs in the church. In Tvoroyri you can see some of the historic buildings used by the Danish Royal Monopoly Store.
