6-Nights Shrines Of Alpine Europe With Oberammergau - Faith-Based Travel

Reaffirm your faith on this tour through Alpine Europe. Along the way, visit some of the most important spiritual sites and pilgrimage destinations of Switzerland, Germany and Austria and contemplate the exceptional natural beauty of the unspoiled mountain areas.

The tour highlight this year is definitely the Passion Play in Oberammergau. Performed by its residents every 10 years as a thank you for the village being saved from the Black Death, this reenactment is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Another remarkable visit is Melk’s 11th-century Benedictine Abbey in Austria. Words cannot describe the splendor of the abbey with its ornate library, frescoed ceilings, stunning high altar, marble statues, and 210-foot-high cupola.

Since the Middle Ages, the Benedictine Abbey of Einsiedeln has been one of Switzerland’s most treasured pilgrimage sites dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Visit the magnificent 18th-century Baroque monastery and the chapel housing the Black Madonna. Altötting has been the spiritual focal point of Bavaria for more than 1,250 years and Germany’s main Marian pilgrimage site, where you can join the evening Mass and candlelight procession. You’ll have the opportunity to visit Vienna and celebrate Mass at the magnificent St. Stephen’s Cathedral.

All of this and more-including time in the picturesque towns of Lucerne and Salzburg and the vibrant city of Munich-is included on this faith-based tour designed for savvy, value-minded travelers. Accompanied by fellow believers, it’s an Alpine Europe vacation you will cherish in your memories for a long time.

Your vacation, which includes the Oberammergau Passion Play, requires a per-person, non-refundable deposit of $600 to secure your reservation and tickets for the play.

Vienna

Vienna is dominated by imperial castles and places: Schonbrunn, the magnificent summer residence, the Imperial Coach Collection, the Palm House, the Butterfly House, Belvedere Palace, magnificent state rooms in Hofburg, and the imperial crown in the Treasury. Stop by Ringstraße - the showplace of the monarchy built where Emperor Franz Joseph ordered the demolition of city walls. Important buildings include the State Opera, the Museums of Fine Arts and Natural History, Parliament, City Hall and Vienna University. The world capital of music. A long line of great composers Johann Strauss, Haydn and Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, Mahler and Schonberg all worked here. A city with splendid concert halls, such as the Golden Hall, from which the Philharmonic's New Year's Day concert is broadcast annually. International stars love to appear here in the State Opera, Volksoper, Konzerthaus, and at festivals like the Vienna Festival, the Klangbogen concerts during the Musical Summer, the Jazz Festval and the Haydn, Mozart and Schubert festivals.

Oberammergau

If Oberammergau did not have the reputation it does, it would have been one of the quietest places among numerous others in the Alps. But its tradition made it that well-known. This tradition does apply to handicraft, to history up to the legends and stories of the village. Oberammergau and the surrounding countryside offer a variety of events and sites, such as hiking and biking tours, winter sports, and tours to the vicinity of Oberammergau. Oberammergau is famous for its wood carving tradition and tromp d'oeil paintings. Today there are about 120 wood sculptors in Oberammergau, actively carving and selling a large variety of wooden artefacts, from figures of saints to household goods. Carvers School offers courses providing specialist training for wood carvers.

Zurich

Zurich is often referred to as the "garden city on the lake". A stroll through the fascinating city will soon explain the reason for this. Zurich is one of the richest cantons in the country and home to the famous and very beautiful shopping street, Bahnhofstrasse. It is a bustling metropolis with many new buildings and modern architecture. Age-old landmarks and examples of unique design and artistic styles proliferate the city; the oldest and best preserved are most densely distributed in Neumarkt. The famous Grossmunster with its two tall towers is most dominant. Visit the late 15th century Wasserkiche and the Rathaus, a graceful town hall built in renaissance style. Famous for its traditional festivals and holiday celebrations, Downtown Niederdorf is the center of activities. From jazz clubs to restaurants & bars to cultural pursuits including galleries, museums and exhibitions, there is something interesting all year. To really get familiar with Zurich, experience it from the Lake of Zurich. The perspective of the city and its romantic surrounds from this vantage point is unique and not to be missed.
