The capital of the State of Amazonas, the belle époque splendor of Manaus is still evident in the graceful mansions and the Teatro Amazonas opera house. This city, resting on the Rio Negro, was created by the rubber boom of the mid-19th-century, when steam navigation opened up the Amazon to entrepreneurs and the social elite. Today, stroll down the Parisian-styled boulevards and Italian piazzas, or watch the fisherman at Municipal Market unload their catch of the day on the river’s edge.

Fortaleza is one of Brazil's major cities with a colorful harbor area and a colonial history dating back to 1612. It has developed around the ancient fortress of Our Lady of Assumption. There's much to enjoy in its old center, where visitors can bargain in the market for embroidery, lace and other local handicrafts. In recent times, the city has made attempts to expand the tourist trade and to encourage the construction of luxury hotels along the city's fine beaches.

Freetown
4/29/2024 6:00:00 AM
4/29/2024 5:00:00 PM

Established for freed slaves in the 1780's, the Krio from North America and the Caribbean brought their language and culture with them; Creole remains the primary language today. When the first slaves came to Freetown, they settled around a cotton tree. This same cotton tree continues to grow in Freetown today. Civil war claimed the city from 1991-2002, but the town has bloomed since the end of the war with hotels and tourist friendly activities. Sitting on Africa's largest natural harbor, Freetown has many beaches that are world-reowned to be clean and beautiful, particularly Lumney.

Bijagos Archipelago
4/30/2024 9:30:00 AM
4/30/2024

Bijagos Archipelago's stream of 88 islands rest off the West-African Coast, with the majority of these tropical lands uninhabited. Home to a diverse myriad of wildlife, including saltwater hippos, five of the world’s eight species of tortoises, and about 96 species of migratory birds, the Bijagos (Bissagos) are far removed and off the beaten path. The islands offer a look into the indigenous customs of a matriarchal society, where local life remains relatively untouched by the outside world. This UNESCO Biosphere Reserve provides a variety of environments to explore and discover an untamed wilderness. Clear beaches give visitors the unique experience of being removed from society. Meet the local people as you walk through villages and savor local cuisine.
